Welcome to Rosemarkie and Fortrose Trust
We are a local voluntary group, registered as a charity and serving the villages of Rosemarkie and Fortrose. The Trust was set up initially in response to the Highland Council’s decision to close the public toilets in the area – which would have had an extremely negative impact for locals and visitors alike. We set up the Trust in order to take over responsibility for developing and running both sets of toilets, and have recently completed an enhancement programme to enable them to become a real asset and benefit to the two communities.
Supported by Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie, one of our key aims is to involve and engage with local people, and to encourage and develop greater understanding and appreciation of the history and heritage of the area, and to identify potential projects which would be of benefit locally. From iron-age times, through the era of the Picts and their important monastery in Rosemarkie, to the building of Fortrose Cathedral, the planting of the flag on Ormond Hill in Avoch, and the building and destruction of Fortrose Castle, there is a huge historic legacy. We plan to reflect this legacy in the work that we do. Both Rosemarkie and Fortrose attract huge numbers of visitors each year, so we see it as important that we make the area as attractive and welcoming as we can, whilst also meeting the needs of our local residents.
